The Chinese company recently released the Meizu MX4 Ubuntu Edition in China, and made the new phone available at its official website.

The handset comes in white or gold colors and will cost about €299.99 (US$331), according to reports.

The original variant of the Meizu MX4 handset runs on the Android operating system and was launched last September 2014 in China.

The European launch date is unclear at this time, but an early report by Slash Gear says the Meizu MX4 Ubuntu smartphone might come out in Europe by mid-June. This will also be the first time for the Chinese company to launch a phone outside of its homeland, according to reports.

The new MX4 device runs on the Ubuntu mobile operating system, offering customers new and different user experience, as the world is currently being dominated by the Android and iOS operating systems.

The Meizu MX4 Ubuntu-based handset has a 5.36 inch display screen that comes with a 1152 x 1920 resolution. It will come with 2GB worth of RAM and 16GB internal storage space that can't be expanded.

The MX4 handset is powered by a 3100 mAh battery and comes with a MediaTek MT6595 chipset. It has a 2 mega pixel front-facing camera and a powerful 20.7 mega pixel rear camera.

Another company that's also reaching out towards Europe with an Ubuntu-based smartphone device is Spanish smartphone firm BQ. BQ and U.K.-based software company Canonical Ltd. are launching the BQ Aquaris E5 Ubuntu Edition smartphone this coming June 22.

According to Canonical, the BQ Aquaris E5 Ubuntu Edition handset is already available for pre-orders on the BQ website.
