'Mafia 3' release date news: driving mechanics seen in new gameplay video

Mafia III 2K Games

"Mafia 3" is set to launch for the PC, Xbox One and PS4 later this year and in order to separate itself from its contemporaries like "Grand Theft Auto V" and "Saints Row" the title is going to adjust some of its mechanics. A new trailer from developer 2K Games focuses on such mechanics such as the driving system in "Mafia 3."

According to a report from Gamespot, the developers have primarily taken inspiration from movies in the 1960s such as "Bullitt," which starred Steve McQueen. This means there will be instances of a slow drive-by that grows into a high-speed chase mixed with violence and close call crashes.

There is also a new mechanic called "Driving Like a Mad Man" where the player can take a person hostage, shove them into a car and then interrogate them as they are driving. However, instead of scaring the hostage by pointing a gun at them the player will scare the hostage into giving information by driving crazilly and dangerously around town.

Once the needed information has been given the player can kill the hostage or kick them out of the car as a sign of mercy. However, it is still possible that by sparing them the hostage could be killed by other means, such as a fast-moving car that runs them over.

Vehicles will also be affected by the surface of the roads. This ensures that driving on dry asphalt will be different when driving on a wet road or on a grassy field. Driving over the muddy bayou or in a dirt road will affect how the car moves.

The video trailer also reveals that the car will feel as realistic as possible, with weight shifting and more affecting how the car behaves. It is stated that real world auto engineers were hired to guarantee that each of the cars look and feel as authentic as possible.

"Mafia 3" launches on Oct. 7.
