Veteran defenseman Christian Ehrhoff is off the free agent market as the Los Angeles Kings signed him to a one-year deal which will earn him $1.5 million; team general manager Dean Lombardi confirmed the signing.
Last season, Ehrhoff played with the Pittsburgh Penguins but was limited to only 49 games because of injuries, which included a concussion.
In 49 regular season games played, Ehrhoff scored three goals and 11 assists for 14 points.
The 33-year-old defenseman missed the Penguins' playoff campaign in the 2014–15 season, which only lasted until the first-round as they were eliminated by the New York Rangers in five games.
Ehrhoff had a hard time finding a team early in the offseason despite being a hundred percent healthy.
The German national also had talks with the Chicago Blackhawks and the Dallas Stars during the free agency but he was not signed to a deal, ESPN reported.
According to ESPN, Ehrhoff is a great addition for the Kings as he adds depth to the position, especially with the team's current situation with defenseman Slava Voynov who was suspended for the majority of the 2014-15 season and was only able to play in six games.
Before playing for the Penguins and now signing with the Kings, Ehrhoff also had stints with the San Jose Sharks who drafted him in the fourth-round in 2001, Vancouver Canucks and the Buffallo Sabres.
The most productive years of his career came in his last year with the Sharks and his first two seasons with the Canucks where he tallied 42, 44, and 50 points, respectively.
Los Angeles hopes he will have the same production as the team failed to make it to the playoffs last season despite winning the Stanley Cup the previous year.
The Kings finished at the ninth spot in the Western Conference with a 40–27–15 record, making them miss the postseason for the first time in six seasons.
