The Los Angeles Dodgers placed second baseman Howie Kendrick on the 15-day disabled list (DL) after suffering a left hamstring strain while attempting to beat an infield single in the fifth inning of Sunday's loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Kendrick said Monday that "it stinks" since it is the time of the year when he wants to be on the field to help the Dodgers and not off the field.
The one-time All-Star is on his first season with the Dodgers after they acquired him via a trade deal last December from the Los Angeles Angels where he spent the first nine years of his Major League Baseball (MLB) career.
Kendrick has played in 105 games for the Dodgers this season hitting .296 with nine home runs and 49 RBIs.
In a report by the Associated Press, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said he is currently unaware how bad the MRI will be adding that all he knows is that Kendrick's condition is bad enough for him to be placed on the list.
"We just don't know how severe it is, and hamstrings are never going to be three or four days. They're going to be a couple of weeks at least, and then we'll see where we're at," Mattingly added.
He acknowledged that Kendrick is a huge loss to the club but said they have players who can get opportunities and he is looking forward to that.
This will be the fourth time in Kendrick's career that he will be on the DL with the first time being in 2011 according to the Los Angeles Times.
In Kendrick's absence, the Dodgers recalled infielder Jose Peraza from Triple-A Oklahoma City to take his roster spot.
The 21-year-old was acquired by Los Angeles in a three-team, 13-player trade on July 30.
Another player placed on the DL by the Dodgers is pitcher Carlos Frias who is suffering from lower back tightness, the Los Angeles Times reported.
