Director Brad Bird recently sat down for an interview with Collider and revealed select details regarding the production of "The Incredibles 2," the long-gestating sequel to the 2004 animated hit "The Incredibles."
In the interview, Bird said he began writing the film's script earlier this year and he is now three quarters done with the first draft. However, he did confirm that the studios have already begun working on the storyboard for the film, with a lot of the production crew from the first film coming back for this sequel.
With regard to the release date, Bird was a little more ambiguous and did not give a direct release window.
"Release dates are a little fluid when you're making films so far in advance," he said. "Some films are tougher to come together and tough nuts to crack, and other ones comes together a little more quickly, and so I'm just going to work as fast as I can work well with a relatively small team because I like small teams better until you've got everything firmly figured out."
Bird also commented that the first film came out back when there weren't so many superhero films, with the most prominent ones at the time being the Sam Raimi "Spider-Man" films and the early "X-Men" movies. These days, there are several comic book movies being released every year and Bird explained he wanted to avoid stepping in the same area.
Instead, the plot will focus on the characters and their relationships rather than being another run-of-the-mill action-adventure flick with superhero characters as the leads. Collider points out that this approach is similar to that in the first film, which wove elements from the spy-genre into its superhero-action story.
There are rumors spreading about, however, such as Jack-Jack growing up despising his father and eventually teaming up with Syndrome, who survived his apparent death at the end of the first film.
