Quarterback Brian Hoyer secured another starting job for the second consecutive season as the Houston Texans decided to make him  their starter after a competition between him and Ryan Mallett.

Texans head coach Bill O'Brien made the announcement when he faced reporters Monday.

"In the end, I thought that Brian showed me the most consistency, the most composure in certain situations, the experience in our system. All those different things that go into the fact that I think he's ready to be our starter," O'Brien said.

O'Brien added that he respects Mallett and believes in him as a player.

In a report by the Houston Chronicle, a source said Hoyer's experience, consistency, decision-making, and having thrown less interceptions during training camp gave him the edge in the competition for the starting job.

Hoyer told reporters that he is excited and had the sense of accomplishment after being named as a starter but it is only the beginning.

"Me being named the starter today doesn't mean that anything is going to be given to me. I have to go out and earn it every day. It's an honor and privilege to be able to do that," he also said.

The 29-year-old quarterback added that he is out to prove to his teammates and the Texans organization that he can be a "winning starting quarterback."

Last season, Hoyer was also selected as a starter by the Cleveland Browns over the 22nd overall pick in the 2014 draft quarterback Johnny Manziel.

Hoyer started in 13 of 14 regular season games played for the Browns throwing for 3,326 yards with 12 touchdowns but also had 13 interceptions including seven interceptions in a span of just three games.

He then lost the starting job to Manziel late in the season as the Browns missed the playoffs ending the regular season with a 7–9 record.

Last March, Hoyer signed a two-year deal with Houston which will earn him $10.5 million with a guaranteed $4.75 million.
