Former CIA agent Carrie (Claire Danes) is to be viewed as a traitor to her own country when the award-winning political thriller series "Homeland" returns for its fifth season.
In an interview with Realty Today, producer Alex Gansa revealed Claire's new career in a private Berlin security firm will cause "plenty of contention" with her former colleagues in the United States. Her friend, Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin), recently appointed CIA director, will reportedly see her work as "counterproductive" to her former values.
Claire's German co-workers will likewise doubt her allegiance. Design & Trend reports that they will suspect her of being a spy and that she may be gathering intelligence to bring back to Langley. Her new boss, Otto Düring (Sebastion Koch), a well-known German philanthropist, will purportedly question her accountability to the company.
Meanwhile, shippers of Claire and Peter Quinn (Rupert Friend) will be happy to know that the two may be reunited for season 5. According to the International Business Times, the recently released trailer of the show hinted of a possible reconciliation between the two characters.
In the teaser, Carrie could be seen helping an injured Quinn while saying the lines, "Come on, stay with me." If viewers could still recall, the two shared an intriguing kiss at the end of Season 4. It ended on a sad note, however, when they decided to part ways afterwards.
Gansa admitted to TV Line that the writers of the show were still confused on how they would be portraying the connection between Claire and Quinn, and how much of it would be "romantic versus operational."
"How much is just that they recognize each other so well? How much is the desire for both of them to move on past this job that they do. Those are the questions that we're wrestling with. We wrestled with them last season. We're wrestling with them again," Gansa said.
Meanwhile, Carrie will meet another man in Berlin. Jonas Happich, who will be played by Alexander Fehling, will reportedly be her next love interest. The Venture Capital Post reports that he will also be working for Düring Foundation as a legal counsel, just like Carrie.
"Homeland" season 5 premieres Oct. 4 on Showtime.
