GTA V PS4, XBox One release date in 2014? GTA 5 Online component available October 1, sales exceed $1 billion

Grand Theft Auto V became the biggest selling game in gaming history as it smashed all records by raking in $1 billion in just three days of its launch.

GTA V was released September 17 to much fanfare, making over $800 in sales on the launch date.

The sales record is not just a milestone for gaming, but for any product released in the entertainment industry, including billion-dollar Hollywood movies.

57 percent of those who bought GTA V were Xbox 360 owners and 43 percent bought Playstation 3 editions.

Despite its powerful sales, gamers around the world are still holding off on purchasing the game, as they anticipate the game's PS4 and Xbox One and even PC editions to release soon.

Both Sony and Microsoft have unveiled their next-generation consoles this year, with the Xbox One release date set for November 22 and PS4 on November 15.

For those waiting to purchase a new console for Christmas this year, they would have to wait until 2014 for the GTA V edition to be released for their console, but keep in mind that Rockstar has not announced any plans to develop the game to support the new consoles.

Games creator Rockstar says they have no plans in place to support the game for PS4 and Xbox One consoles.

GTA V co-writer Dan Houser told The Guardian: "Of course we're interested. But no, not in terms of GTA, because we're always working on the current game. We look at the tech at a more practical level: what will be ready for which game that we're working on further down the line. We don't have another GTA in development, we don't work on three of these games at a time. That would be phenomenally depressing. So, in terms of GTA, no. We get pitched by the hardware manufacturers on what they're planning to do and our tech guys come up with ideas on how that could be used. Does this influence design decisions? Of course. But we're not sat there fantasizing about 10 years down the line. We're so busy with what we're doing right now."

Last week, Robert W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian hinted that GTA V may be released in PS4 and Xbox One editions next year.

Calling the launch day figures the "largest entertainment property launch in history, Sebastian said in a note to investors last week: "We are now modeling 13-14 million units shipped in F2Q. We believe there is still potential upside to our targets. However, given the possibility that sales of GTA are front-loaded, we will await further sales data before adjusting our expectations further."

While things are yet to be set in stone for the game's release in next-gen consoles, the Grand Theft Auto Online multiplayer component will be released on October 1 as a free update.

The violent nature of the Grand Theft Auto gaming series has been widely criticized since its first launch and is the most controversial video game series in history. The game has been accused of glamorizing violence, corrupting gamers, and has been connected to a number of real life crimes that stem from the violent nature of the game.
