'GTA 6' rumors: Release date only for PS4 and set for 2017?

GTA V Rockstar Games

Reports from Venture Capital Post indicate that the next "Grand Theft Auto" game could be out by 2018. On the other hand, a separate report from Master Herald, citing a rumored leak, states that "GTA VI" may come out a year earlier.

VCPost's estimated 2018 release date was based on the release schedule of previous games in the series. According to the site, the gap between "GTA III" and "GTA IV" was 7 years, while the gap between "GTA IV" and "GTA V" was 5 years. However, between each release was a slur of additional content and spin-off titles such as "GTA: San Andreas" and "GTA IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony."

One interesting detail reported by the Latinos Post is that the rumored "GTA VI" game will only be for PlayStation 4. While it does not necessarily mean that there will be no Windows and Xbox One versions planned, it may indicate Rockstar is currently working on the PS4 version first.

Another rumor from the Latinos Post is that the next title may utilize a female lead character. This will be a first for the series. All of the games since the first "Grand Theft Auto" have used male leads, although "GTA IV" and "GTA V" did feature prominent female supporting characters.

While the developer has not confirmed nor denied any of the rumors thus far, the interview of Rockstar Games President Leslie Benzies with Digital Trends from way back 2012 remains as a favorite go-to for many media outlets and game enthusiasts who are trying to figure out what "GTA VI" will bring to the table.

"Of course at some point we would like to have one big world containing all our cities and let the player fly between them and revisit their favorite areas," Benzies stated, which many hope would finally happen in the next "GTA" installment. "In that context re-imagining Vice City would be very interesting."

As for "GTA VI," Benzies stated in a 2013 interview with Develop, "We've got about 45 years worth of ideas we want to do. We don't know what GTA VI will be, but we've got some ideas. GTA Online is the focus right now. There ain't no rest between finishing V and then Online. Plus we have some other things – stuff, DLC, I don't know how to describe it exactly – that we'd like to do, and we'll pick the right ones."

Since both "GTA V" and "GTA Online" have already rolled out, the developer is likely working on expansions at the moment. VC Post has stated that Rockstar Games will feed the fans new content with the upcoming "Online Heists Casino" DLC.
