Alex (Justin Chambers) has decided to take the plea deal to keep Jo (Camilla Ludington) safe from her husband's reach. Meanwhile, Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) has runaway from Owen (Kevin McKidd), and this could push him to break off their marriage.
Previously in "Grey's Anatomy" season 13, Jo confessed to Alex about her past marriage with her abusive husband. She revealed her past to Alex because she was called to testify in his court trial and Jo was afraid that her husband might find her. Alex then decided to take the plea deal — where he has to serve two years in jail — just to keep Jo safe from her violent husband.
Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) tried to stop Alex from taking the deal, but is she too late? And even if she was able to reach Alex, will he really put himself first before Jo?
Meanwhile, Amelia ran away from her marriage with Owen after a disagreement involving having children. Will this drive Owen to break off their marriage? In an interview with Variety, McKidd shared that Owen will be giving Amelia some space, but won't be waiting too long to talk to his wife.
"There's only so long anyone can do that, before they see the writing on the wall. When people want different things fundamentally in their lives, that's a big problem. They're definitely on the rocks and their future is definitely in question," explained McKidd.
Owen had gone through a similar situation with his past wife Cristina (Sandra Oh), and it lead to them going their separate ways in the end. McKidd shared that he hopes his character will become a father someday and that it will be with Amelia, but their future together is uncertain.
"But right now, I think that ball is in her court. Eventually Owen is going to have to say he can only do this so many times and he can't do it anymore," McKidd added.
