GameStop selling new 2TB PS4, trumping new Sony 1TB model

GameStop is now selling a new and larger than ever 2TB PlayStation 4 (PS4).

The retailer is advertising the new model as a "premium refurbished" PS4.

It is worth noting that the 2TB PlayStation 4 on sale from GameStop is a used model that the retailer modified on its own; so it is not a given that it will still work perfectly after a few months of usage.

There are no other significant differences between GameStop's model and the brand new PS4 units available in the market.

The supersized PS4 from GameStop is expected to rival the newly released 1TB unit from Sony, although it is worth noting that Sony's newest offering has yet to be released in North America, according to Polygon.

As for the price of the "premium refurbished" PS4 from GameStop, prospective owners can snag it for $479.99. GameStop is seeking to make deal even more attractive by providing buyers with an option to get a free game along with their new console, for as long as the title they are getting is already on sale for less than $30.

According to Geek, even though the 2TB model from GameStop is certainly convenient and useful; the deal itself may not be cost-efficient from the perspective of the consumers. The website points out that a new 500 GB PS4 model costs $399 and a new 2TB hard drive can be had for $98, putting the total cost of a self-customized 2TB unit at $497. Building the unit on their own also gives prospective buyers the advantage of knowing full well that the components they are getting are brand new and reliable, instead of taking a risk with the used units from GameStop.

GameStop has indicated that the availability of their 2TB PS4 model will depend on how much demand there will be for their new offering.
