The current reincarnation of the Time Lord is bracing for an all-or-nothing face-off with an old enemy in the upcoming season of BBC's "Doctor Who."

Tech Insider reports that the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) has a date with a longstanding "friend" and that his life may be in danger. In the new promo released by the network, viewers can see that he is back in Karn, the planet shown during "The Night of the Doctor" mini-episode in 2013.

In the clip with the Doctor is Ohila (Clare Higgins), one of the members of the Sisterhood. The group in charge of protecting the "Sacred Flame," which creates the elixir of life. Ohila is trying to convince the Doctor to forget his plan of meeting one of his long-time nemeses, but the latter appears dead set on his date with fate.

He gives the lady a mystery item, asking her to hand it over to someone. Is he pertaining to travel companion Clara (Jenna Coleman), whom he parted ways with in season 8? It certainly looks like the Doctor is on his own for this mission, but the trailer suggests that Clara will be able to catch up with him soon. Who is this troubling foe he has to face? He even has to put his life at stake.

In the official synopsis released by BBC, Clara is trying to search for him "when the skies of Earth are frozen" due to the invading super power villains. Screencrush reports that he Doctor is trying to hide from something, perhaps an old enemy. His past misdeeds and foes will reportedly come back to haunt him, endangering his life and Clara's.

Is the enemy being pertained in the synopsis the same person he is setting up to meet in the teaser? If yes, something big is slated to happen in the upcoming installment for the Doctor to drastically change his mind. This development must be catastrophic enough for him to break his self-imposed exile in Karn.

"Doctor Who" season 9 will premiere on Saturday, Sept. 19, on BBC.
