'Destiny 2' release date: rebooted version of game reportedly coming in 2017

 Bungie

"Destiny" has proven to be a massive success for Bungie, the development team that started the "Halo" franchise, but according to a report from Kotaku, the next game in the franchise is going to be delayed and when it is released, it won't even be a sequel. According to the report, "Destiny 2" is scheduled as a full-fledged reboot.

According to the report, "Destiny 2" was initially scheduled to be released this year but has since been moved to an unspecified 2017 release date. It is further explained that a leaked image confirms that in its place is a new DLC expansion for the first game, titled "Rise of Iron."

"Destiny 2" will also see a shift behind the scenes as the report reveals that there has been some staff reorganization in Bungie and now Luke Smith, director of "Destiny: The Taken King" DLC, will be spearheading the project. Smith has been in charge of the "Destiny" franchise since the turn of the year.

It is expected that the "Rise of Iron" DLC will also end the storyline for the first "Destiny" game if the second game is indeed going to be a reboot instead of a proper sequel that propels the ongoing story forward. The DLC was initially reported to be based on cut material from "House of Wolves" but was later revealed to be entirely new content.

This will be a far cry from the usual style Bungie practiced with their older games since each new "Halo" game was a sequel to the title before it.

The report states that the new DLC will launch in June this year and it is speculated that this should have been the release date for "Destiny 2" if it was not pushed back by another year. Fans speculate that "Destiny 2" may now see a late summer or early fall 2017 release, coinciding with the anniversary of the first game's release.
