The loss of original starting quarterback Tony Romo has been huge for the Dallas Cowboys who will now be starting another veteran in Matt Cassel to replace Brandon Weeden when they return to action in Week 7 against the New York Giants.

Weeden has not captured a win since taking over the starting duties for Romo, who suffered a broken collarbone in their second win of the season over the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2.

Since the injury has sidelined Romo, Dallas has been on a three-game losing skid with the most recent suffered against defending Super Bowl champions the New England Patriots last Sunday.

The loss to the Patriots was Weeden's 11th consecutive defeat as a starter, according to reports.

Because of the 32-year-old starter's struggles, the Cowboys will be having their third starting quarterback this season in Cassel, who was traded from the Buffalo Bills following Romo's injury.

ESPN reported that when Cassel joined the Cowboys, he was an inactive third string quarterback but last week was promoted as the number two quarterback, replacing Kellen Moore.

Now that he will be the starter, Cassel expressed his eagerness for his new role with the Cowboys.

"I'm really excited. It's an opportunity and there's no doubt about it — I don't take it for granted, I know how hard it is to get on the field in this league," the 33-year-old quarterback said last Wednesday, according to the team's website.

Cassel also stated, "I told you guys a few weeks ago, it's always been a dream of mine to play for the Cowboys, let alone to be the starter for the Cowboys. I'm excited about the opportunity, and I'll work extremely hard. Hopefully we'll go out there and get some wins."

In his career in the National Football League (NFL), Cassel played in 90 regular season games having 1,397 completions for 15,727 yards and 96 touchdowns.
