"Attack on Titan" has become one of the most popular animes in recent years but has been more than two years since the launch of the first season. Despite a long delay, a report from Crunchyroll now confirms that season 2 is indeed coming and that it will launch in spring 2017.
The announcement was made during the Attack Festival live-reading event held at the Tokyo International Forum. The report points out that production begins in spring 2017 and it is likely that episodes will be released as they are produced, ensuring that fans will not need to wait too long for the anime to get out on the air.
However, fans speculate that the spring production and release is solely for the Japanese audience and that fans from around the globe will need to wait a few months more as the local networks work on localization and dubbing.
The report continues to point out that the staff of season 1 will be returning but with a few changes. Tetsuro Araki is now taking the role of chief director and Masashi Koizuka will be moving up from an episode director to the season's overall director, akin to the role of a showrunner for many Hollywood television shows.
Several of the cast and Masashi Koizuka also explained that season 2 was originally planned to release in 2016 back when they were working on season 1 and the live-action film in November 2014.
No official plot synopsis has yet been released but if the series follows the original manga source material it is likely season 2 will see the Survey Corps launch a revolution against the Reiss royal family, which has been revealed to be comprised of people capable of turning into Titans.
The season may also involve the revelation that Krista Lenz is in fact Historia Reiss, the true successor to the throne and she may be the one that the Survey Corps will hand the throne to once the rest of the royal family has been dealt with.
