Arizona Cardinals running back Andre Ellington is again injured suffering a mild posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) sprain to his right knee that will sideline him, promoting Chris Johnson as the starter.
Ellington suffered the injury in the final quarter of their season opener against the New Orleans Saints which they won 31–19.
According to ESPN, Ellington gained two yards in a run with 11 minutes left in the quarter but went down untouched.
He was then assisted by trainers and was examined in a table behind the Cardinals' bench, ESPN added.
Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said Ellington will likely be out for one to three weeks; however, he is not ruling out the possibility of the running back being able to play in their Week 2 game against the Chicago Bears.
In ESPN's report, Arians said last Monday that Ellington already got hurt in the play before he went down after his knee hit the ground, adding that when the 26-year-old made the cut, "...he knew it wasn't right."
Last season, Ellington was also injured with a torn tendon, according to The Arizona Republic, but played through it and rushed for 660 yards (201 carries) with three touchdowns in 12 regular season games played.
In Sunday's game, he had 12 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown before going down.
Ellington's injury prompted Arians to make the veteran Johnson as his starter until his main running back is again ready to play.
Johnson, who was signed by the Cardinals last month to a one-year deal, had 10 carries for 37 yards against the Saints.
The 29-year-old footballer said the running back is perhaps the most physical position as they get hit every play, so it is important to have players who are ready to step in since you will never know when a guy is going down.
Johnson is in his eighth season and his first with the Cardinals after the Jets decided not to keep him following the 2014 season.
