Microsoft's Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 platforms could not attract the kind of popularity that the company's Windows 7 and Windows XP gained, so the software giant intends on making amends with the release of its Windows 10 operating system. While the platform will be officially released later in the year, the company will be hosting an event on Jan. 21 to discuss the core features of its operating system, as well as to discuss the future of gaming on the platform.

Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft's Xbox division and Microsoft Studios, is expected to be present at the event and will be spearheading the "future of gaming" talks. As the company's Xbox console could not overtake the success that Sony's PlayStation 4, Spencer stated that the company is going to branch out the Xbox One exclusive gaming titles to PC gamers in order to attract a larger audience.

As far as Windows 10 is concerned, the company has not given any word on how the upcoming operating system will bring a change to all forms of gaming but it is expected that the platform's features will be responsible for those changes. Microsoft's upcoming operating is the company's first-ever OS to feature a "unified interface;" meaning the same interface will be present on all platforms, irrespective of the kind of device the person will be using.

Windows 10 will also provide support for the company's latest DirectX API, DirectX 12. In terms of performance and energy efficiency, DirectX 12 is able to render higher frames while consuming less power on lesser performing chips than what its predecessor could accomplish. Again, Microsoft has not commented whether or not it will be delivering a large scale demonstration on what the company's latest API is able to achieve but since one of the reasons why it is hosting the event is to discuss the future of gaming, it might be saving the best feature for last.
