The prequel to the 2001 hit movie "Wet Hot American Summer" is set to premiere on July 31 and fans are all excited to watch the original cast members and new characters intermingle in what is dubbed as "the summer show of the year."
In "First Day of Camp," Netflix is bringing back old faces including Janeane Garofalo, Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper, and Elizabeth Banks. They will be joined by Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Jason Schwartzman, and other newcomers to give new life to the big-screen cult favorite.
Unlike in the movie, the prequel is set at the Calamigos Ranch in Malibu. The eight-episode series will kick off on the opening day of Camp Firewood in 1981, where both counselors and campers are set to experience the best summer of their lives. David Wain, who originally directed the film, will again take the helm for "Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp," while Michael Showalter co-penned the scripts.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Poehler shared her thoughts on reprising her role as Susie and the reunion of the original casts.
"[Slipping back to Susie's character the first time] was weird. The entire experience of 'Wet Hot' from beginning to end almost feels like a bonus track. The fact that we got to do it, the fact that it was made, the fact that it was good, the fact that people continue to like it, and now we're doing this — it all feels like extra cool stuff," she said.
The "Parks and Recreation" alum also talked about how the entire thing felt like a "reunion" for the old hands. She said they were showing pictures of kids and dogs to each other and that people were "a lot older and more relaxed" on the set. For Phoeler, the legacy of the movie is "the cast that was assembled."
Meanwhile, Wetpaint dishes out that the sequel stays pretty true to its original form. George Dalton, who plays music-lover Arty, told the website how fun it was to work with the rest of the casts, especially comedian Michael Ian Black.
"It was funny to see what the new thing would be. Sometimes I couldn't control myself and I'd laugh my head off."
