The leader of a new mysterious organization will drop by Mystic Falls when "The Vampire Diaries" returns for the second half of season 7.

TV Line revealed that "The Following" star Mouzam Makkar will join the cast of "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 as Alex, the "beautiful, charming and cocky researcher at the head of a mysterious organization." The character, who is expected to appear in the series in episode 14, is also described as a "viper in sheep's clothing."

Series executive producer Caroline Dries told TV Line that Alex's visit to Mystic Falls can be connected to Enzo's (Michael Malarkey) backstory.

"As he's trying to find his place in the world, she comes in and says, 'Let me help you out with that.' Is she good? Is she bad? What's her bigger agenda? We'll pull back her layers as the season goes on," Dries explained.

The mystery behind Alex's "organization" is also expected to be revealed in the upcoming episodes of season 7.

Meanwhile, the midseason premiere of "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 will focus on Damon's (Ian Somerhalder) attempt to get out of Julian's (Todd Lasance) spell that trapped him inside the Phoenix stone.

"The episode plunges the audience head first into a not-so-typical Damon mess," Dries revealed in a previous interview with Entertainment Weekly. "It's a grueling, frustrating, at times even a little hilarious examination of one of our favorite and most damaged characters. Turns out that in the murk of Damon Salvatore's psyche, redemption isn't easy to find."

Damon will relive his traumatic past while entrapped inside the Phoenix stone, including the disastrous time that he spent during the Civil War. But while Damon struggles inside the stone, Bonnie (Kat Graham) will do everything to help him get out.

The midseason premiere of "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 will air on Jan. 29 on The CW.
