"The Last Ship" season 2 ended with a twist when Doctor Scott (Rhona Mitra) was suddenly shot in the hallways and her fate still unknown. The cure has been successfully spread across the former United States, but according to Spoiler TV, the mission of the USS Nathan James is far from over.

According to the official synopsis for season 3, the crew of the ship will discover that the rest of the world is still in peril. It is stated that the virus may have mutated in Japan, causing yet another outbreak in the area. This will require the team to create a different version of the cure in order to contain the new virus strand.

Fans speculate that this virus may somehow spread across the world, ensuring that the series can continue forward despite the fact that a cure has been developed and shared. However, this new virus may be stopped sooner than later to prevent the world population from further dwindling further down.

Japan isn't the only Asian area that the ship will need to visit. It is also revealed that President Peng of China may have been holding the cure instead of distributing it to the Chinese people. To investigate these allegations further, US President Michener (Mark Moses) sends Chandler (Eric Dane) and the USS Nathan James to a global summit.

There is also the issue concerning the fate of Doctor Rachel Scott. The promo trailer for the third season does not give any major clue regarding her fate, and it is speculated that she will not make it through, making it all the more crucial for the Nathan James and its crew to stop a new virus strand from spreading before it gets too big for them to handle.

"The Last Ship" season 3 premieres June 12.
