'The Blacklist' season 3 spoilers: Plot to dig deeper into Liz's past

Liz's secrets will be exposed further in "The Blacklist" season 3. NBC

The upcoming season of NBC's crime drama series "The Blacklist" will find Liz (Megan Boone) dwelling deeper into her past.

Realty Today reports that the show's third installment will further reveal the fugitive's former life as she continues to evade capture from the authorities for the murder of Tom Connolly (Reed Birney). In the previous season, viewers became privy to many of Liz's secrets. It has been exposed that her real name was Masha Rostova and that she was guilty of killing her own father in defense of her mother, a former Russian spy.

Creator Jon Bokenkamp has earlier revealed that it was her criminal past that urged Liz to become an FBI profiler. Now that she is on the run with Reddington (James Spader), Bokenkamp let it slip that her skills will come handy in keeping one step ahead of the federal agents.

As for Liz's ex-husband Tom Keen (Ryan Eggold), the website divulges that he will come to her aid. Tom will apparently help her against the new leader of the FBI taskforce, Agent Donald Ressler (Diego Klattenhoff).

Meanwhile, Robert Greenblatt of the NBC Entertainment disclosed that viewers could expect "big changes" for season 3 during the network's recent Television Critics Association summer press tour. Zap2it reports that the chairman said there would be "a switch-up" in the flow of story from the previous format and that this would "revitalize" the show.

"The trajectory of the story is great because it's a switch-up from what the format has been. Liz and Reddington are literally on the run together. It's going to energize the whole thing. It's a different feel this year," Greenblatt said.

According to the synopsis released by NBC, the premiere episode will be featuring a CIA analyst volunteering to go undercover. In "The Troll Farmer," the desk-bound agent will try to prevent a global disaster by infiltrating the dangerous world of arms dealership.

"The Blacklist" returns on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 9 p.m. EST on NBC.
