The last season of "The Big Bang Theory" ended with a cliffhanger, and with its new installment slated to return this fall, fans are intent to know what will happen to the love story of Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and Amy Fowler (Mayim Bialik).

Amy dumped Sheldon at the end of Season 8, with the physicist holding what was presumably an engagement ring. Steve Molaro, creator of the show, shared his insights on the "Shamy" tandem with The Hollywood Reporter.

"I don't know exactly what's going to happen, but he's clearly fond of her. I don't think they're done speaking by any means. He's so fond of her - something is going to happen between them, I'm sure," Molaro said.

Meanwhile, Bialik told Los Angeles Times that fans should not immediately jump to the conclusion that Sheldon was going to propose to Amy.

"We don't really know what the story is with that ring. And I think that's something I had to remember as an actor. We don't know what he was planning to do with it. We don't know if it was something he got from his mother. We don't know what the process was by which he acquired that and what he would think to do with it."

She nevertheless admitted that anything could happen on the show. "People want to jump to all sorts of conclusions because it's super-exciting to do so, and they love these characters and they know them. But the neat thing about our show and Jim and my character's relationship is that anything can happen. And I think the finale was proof of that."

Meanwhile, fans can also expect a big revelation on Season 9 regarding Kaley Cuoco's character Penny. Movie Pilot reports that Sheldon's neighbor could be related to another character in the show. Penny's surname remains unknown, but it has been reported to be "Barrington."

Season 9 of "The Big Bang Theory" will air on Sept. 21 on CBS.
