'Terminator 5: Genisys' trailer shows Arnold Schwarzenegger's new look, plot details

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Emilia Clarke in Terminator: Genisys Paramount

Skydance and Paramount Pictures recently launched a new trailer for "Terminator Genisys," and the short video reveals a lot of information regarding the film's plot. It also lets viewers have a closer look at Arnold Schwarzenegger's character, the Guardian.

The trailer reveals that the Guardian was sent back in time when Sarah Connor, played by Emilia Clarke, was a child. This "resets" the timeline laid down by the previous four films because now, Sarah grew up fully aware of the role her future son John Connor will play in the war against the machines.

One of the first things fans will notice is that the Guardian looks old, just about as old as Schwarzenegger is in real life. According to the creators of the film, this is because the outer flesh of the Terminator is biological. While the machine inside is practically immortal, the flesh on the exterior ages and deteriorates with time.

A younger version of Schwarzenegger, created by using both a body double and a CGI recreation of the actor's likeness, will be seen in the new film, and it's the same Terminator featured in the 1984 movie.

Like in the original film, Kyle Reese, played by Jai Courtney, volunteers to travel back to the past to protect Sarah Connor from Terminators. However, when he arrives, he learns that the circumstances have changed due to the Guardian's interference.

The biggest twist revealed in the trailer, however, is that John Conner, played by Jason Clarke, is now one of the film's main antagonists. A rumor about John Connor turning into a new kind of Terminator has been rampant for some time but this is the first time that it is addressed. As it turns out, the rumor is true and John Connor travels back to the past as a threat to his own mother.

"Everything has changed," Sarah Connor says in the trailer. "We are humanity's last hope."

"Terminator Genisys" is scheduled to hit theaters on July 1.
