"Tekken 7," the latest iteration in the popular line of fighting games, has enjoyed a lot of success since its release earlier this year. The game has been well-received by players and critics alike, and a recent milestone proves just how popular the game is. The game's director Katsuhiro Harada announced this week that from June to September, the game has hold over two million copies on consoles.

The news was shared by the director on Twitter Tuesday. It is a notable achievement considering that its predecessor, "Tekken 6" only managed to reach 1.8 million sold copies seven months after it was released.

Including the sales numbers in PC gaming platform Steam, "Tekken 7" has sold over 2.3 million copies in just three months. The game has sold more units in less time than its competitor, "Street Fighter V," which has sold 1.7 million copies since its release on PlayStation 4 last year.

Despite the success of "Tekken 7," Harada still looks up to the "Street Fighter" series as well as "Virtua Fighter" as the games that the Tekken series is still eyeing to surpass.

"We still fight to overcome the shadow of Street Fighter, the legendary game that started the genre," he said in a report from Gamasutra. "And also fight to surpass the specter of Virtua Fighter, another legendary series with many fans who love it."

However, it seems like the game designer has found a sweet spot when it comes to the type of audience that is targeted by his titles. "In reality, even though it is a versus fighting game, the majority of our audience are casual players who aren't trying to be the best in the world, but are satisfied to beat a certain rival, perhaps just the friend next to them," Harada added.

It would be interesting to see if "Tekken 7" will continue its rapid rise in popularity in the coming months, and if it would become the fighting game-to-beat in the near future.
