'Teen Wolf' season 5 premiered on Monday with mostly positive reactions from the viewers. The Young Folks even tagged it "the show's best premiere yet," save for the show's unfortunate and confusing opening minutes.
"Creatures of the Night" opened with Lydia (Holland Roden) the banshee, trapped in the Eichen House and seemingly comatose until her assailants tried to kill her and she woke up to defend herself. What the viewers had difficulty absorbing was how on earth she fought the bad guys with impressive fighting skills she never used to have in the previous seasons. Even her screams were more powerful, with some sort of "sonic force."
Fortunately, TV Line gave the show some slack, saying executive producer Jeff Davis explained to their staff that the events at Eichen House took place a week in the future. This means that everything else shown in the episode was a flashback.
Although Derek (Tyler Hoechlin) is no longer in the picture, the rest of the gang are still as thick as thieves, now in their final year in high school. Stiles (Dylan O'Brien) and Scott (Tyler Posey) are still the favorites in the show, praised for their unwavering loyalty to each other. They now have a surrogate brother in Liam (Dylan Sprayberry).
Posey, however, warned fans in an interview with Zap2it that things will not go that smoothly for the bro-ship. The stress of the new evil force in town, he said, will wear on their friendship.
"They get pulled apart a little bit. They have a blowout, which is going to be really fun to play. We have toyed with Scott and Stiles getting mad at each other but this is different. There may be some tears coming from some upset fans," he said.
The Kira (Arden Cho) and Scott relationship still needs more convincing, with TV Line saying "they still don't share enough chemistry to build the series' main couple around."
The premiere also introduced Theo (Cody Christian), a lone wolf. Whether he is a friend or foe remains to be seen. Fans will definitely tune in to the next episode to know about this new plot.
Overall, "Creatures of the Night" showed the right balance of humor, action and drama, enough to make the viewers come back for more.
