Tamar Braxton, the Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter, got candid and revealed her personal experience of leaving an abusive relationship during a segment of the show 'The Real' last Tuesday, Jan. 13.

The 37-year old singer told her co-hosts that God saved her from her own mistakes; she was with the wrong person and on the show she recalled how it made her feel about herself while she was in that relationship.

"God really saved me from myself, because I was with the wrong person, and when I was with the wrong person, it made me feel bad about who I was," Braxton said.

She further stated, "He made me feel so bad about having dreams, having goals...and my dreams and goals was not the same as his," she continued. "And because of that he used to beat me down, mentally and physically. It was just a really hard time for me."

She also said that her ex-lover got away with the abuse because she didn't know herself and she made a lot of bad decisions; she simply didn't know where to go and where to ask for help.

While she has a strong family background, she felt it was her own insecurities and uncertainty of who she was that prevented her from getting the support she needed at that time.

Wiser and braver Braxton ended her confession with a message to her viewers, "That's why I like to encourage all young ladies — I say it during my shows, I'm gonna say it here — get to know you."

This revelation was not the first for Braxton, younger sister of singer Toni Braxton.  In a previous interview with EBONY in 2013, she also mentioned her experience but did not reveal details of the abuse.  She gave the credit to God in that interview too and continues to give credit to Him about how He rescued her from the abusive relationship.

Braxton is now married to music executive Vince Herbert and they have a 19-month old son, Logan, US Magazine reports.
