'Supergirl': CBS TV series not crossing over with 'The Flash,' 'Arrow'

Melissa Benoist as Supergirl CBS

The first trailer for the new CBS superhero series "Sueprgirl" was recently launched online and fans have started speculating if the series would crossover with "The Flash" and "Arrow," both of which are on The CW network.

Both Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and Flash (Grant Gustin) were featured on the latest cover of Variety magazine, further implying that the shows might be connected at some point. However, according to a new report by Variety, this crossover no longer seems likely to happen, at least for the time being.

The cover was for a feature revolving around Greg Berlanti, executive producer for the three aforementioned superhero shows as well as the upcoming "DC Legends of Tomorrow" which is a spin-off of "Arrow" and "The Flash."

When asked if the shows would ever cross over, Berlanti stated, "The network has said publicly at this point they're going to keep her to themselves. I always approach the shows as a fan first, so I would love to see it. I think in success, all things are possible. But there's a lot that would have to happen before everybody might say yes to that."

One of the first major concerns is that "Supergirl" is on the CBS network while "Arrow" and "The Flash" are on The CW. However, The CW is partly owned by CBS so there might be some way to work it out without breaking distribution rights.

The other big concern is continuity. As pointed out in a report by Cinema Blend, people with super powers haven't been around for long in the world established by The CW shows and the Arrow is the first publicly known superhero. However, in "Supergirl," it appears that Superman has been around for at least a decade.

Berlanti did state that success is the key to it eventually happening so as long as the shows do not drop in terms of rating and viewership, then the studios might re-consider doing a crossover later on. For now however, "Supergirl" will remain solo on CBS.
