Super Mario continues to be a popular video game franchise up until now.

Nintendo recently announced that five days since the launch of the video game "Super Mario Odyssey," it has managed to sell 1.1 million units in the United States alone. It has become the fastest-selling Super Mario video game in the country after taking the top spot from "New Super Mario Bros." which was released on Wii.

According to  a statement released by Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo America President and COO, "The public continues to respond positively to Mario's latest adventure. We're also seeing sales momentum for Nintendo Switch thanks to an ever-growing catalog of games from large publishers and indie developers."

With the video game selling over a million units in the United States, Nintendo expects it go even higher as players and fans spread the word about the new Super Mario title that currently has an average review rating of 97, according to Metacritic, tying with the Zelda game "Breath of the Wild" for the highest-rated Nintendo video game in years. Edge gave the game high marks for its inventiveness for introducing new ideas and deviating from the formulaic Super Mario games.

With the holidays just around the corner, the video game developer has increased its production of the Nintendo Switch console to meet the possible upward trend in demand. At the end of last month, the total number Nintendo Switch units sold in the United States was over 2.6 million.

The video game is a 3D platform video game which is an installment of the Super Mario series and follows the story of Mario and Cappy, Mario's possessed hat that allows him to control of other characters and objects as they take on the task of going through different worlds to save Princess Peach from his adversary Bowser, who plans to take the princess for his bride.

"Super Mario Odyssey" was launched last Oct. 27.
