All playable characters in "Street Fighter 5" can all be unlocked through simply playing the game.

According to game publisher and developer Capcom Co., Ltd. Community Manager Peter Rosas, the "Street Fighter 5" disc itself is the only one player will ever need to own even if they want to unlock all that there is to be enjoyed in the game. Rosas said players can unlock everything, including bonus characters, simply by how well and how long they play the game, according to the official PlayStation blog.

Rosas also said that the "Street Fighter 5" roster will be made up of 16 characters to begin with. At this point, Capcom has already revealed seven of the 16, with those being Ryu, Ken, Birdie, Cammy, Charlie Nash, Chun-Li and M. Bison. Capcom has also begun teasing the reveal of the eighth character. In addition to the already known characters, Rosas also said that there will be four new characters that have previously never been part of the Street Fighter franchise. To this point however, it is unknown just how many downloadbale content (DLC) characters are going to be included in the game.

Apart from players being given the opportunity to unlock all of the game's characters for free, all of the balance and system updates coming to "Street Fighter 5" will also be free of charge.

The new change to the player acquisition mechanic is being seen as one of Capcom's ways to keep players engaged, according to Polygon. On top of that, more updates are also expected to be coming out for "Street Fighter 5" after it is launched; so those too will be used to keep the community engaged.

Players will still have the option of purchasing content if they choose to. "Street Fighter 5" will have two kinds of in-game currency – Fight Money, which is earned through playing the game, and Zenny, which can be bought using real world money. Players can use either one to purchase content for "Street Fighter 5."

"Street Fighter 5" will be released for personal computers (PC) and PlayStation 4 next year.
