'Sherlock: Abominable Bride' news: Christmas special will be only 'Sherlock' episode aired in 2016

The Christmas special of "Sherlock" titled "Abombinable Bride" aired last Jan. 1, and that may be the only "Sherlock" episode that fans will be seeing this 2016.

"Sherlock" will be gaining another season to continue to adventures of the contemporary spin of Sherlock Holmes, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, and Dr. Watson, played by Martin Freeman. The not-so-good news is that viewers will most probably have to wait another year to see the fourth season of the TV series.

The series creator Steven Moffat said in an interview with Collider that filming will start April this year. With that in mind and given the time that the production will need to string together the episodes, it is highly unlikely that "Sherlock" season 4 will premiere anytime in 2016.

Reports are going around that the first quarter of 2016 will be when the next season of the action drama series will hit television sets again.

However, Moffat thinks that the wait will be worth it as he has pledged that season 4 will be even better than season 3. "We have a plan to top [Season 3]," said Moffat in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "And I do think our plan is devastating. We've practically reduced our cast to tears telling them the plan ... we're probably more excited that we've ever been about Sherlock."

The third season ended with a Christmas special, "Abomindable Bride," which transports Holmes and Watson back into the Victorian era where they solve the mystery of a suicidal bride who appears to have come back to life to seek revenge on London's husbands. The Christmas special had viewers scratching their heads and wondering if the alternate story had any connection to the original plot of "Sherlock," especially pertaining to the death of Sherlock's mortal enemy Moriarity.

Though it has been implied many times that Moriarty, played by Andrew Scott, is indeed dead, fans will have to wait until next season to confirm if he truly is out of the picture.
