Samsung Gear Live vs Samsung Gear A specs: What to expect

South Korean smartphone maker Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. plans to announce its Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge Plus this coming Aug. 12, according to the latest rumor. In addition, a new story claims Samsung will also unveil its new smartwatch device, the Gear A, alongside the two new handsets on the same day.

The Samsung Gear A smartwatch comes almost more than a year after the South Korean giant released its previous "Samsung Gear Live" back in June 2014. Now just weeks away from the rumored unveiling, here's what fans can expect from the new Samsung smartwatch in terms of the specs and what makes it different from its predecessor.

The Samsung Gear Live runs on the Android Wear operating system (OS) and comes with a 1.63-inch Super AMOLED display screen with a 320 x 320 pixel resolution.

Gear A, on the other hand, has been rumored to run on Samsung's own Tizen OS for wearables and will sport a Super AMOLED display screen with a slightly higher 360 x 360 pixel resolution. It's unclear how large the display screen will be, but GSM Arena has suggested it might be 1.65 inches.

Internally, the Samsung Gear Live has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, 512MB worth of RAM and up to 4GB internal memory storage. For the Gear A, reports say it is expected to pack an Exynos 3472 processor, a larger 768MB RAM and the same 4GB internal memory capacity.

The Gear Live smartwatch comes with a 300 mAh battery while the Gear A is expected to have only 250 mAh battery, according to the reports. In terms of the design, Tech Radar reported last year that the Gear Live smartwatch was commended for being sleeker than LG's G watch, but was criticized for its unoriginal design.

Unlike the Gear Live, the new Gear A smartwatch is expected to sport a round shape and will also come with other features such as a heart rate monitor, an accelerometer, and a gyroscope, among others.
