Refurbished Mission to Seafarers Centre Opens in Hull

|PIC1|Mission to Seafarers has re-opened one of its seafarers' centres in the port of Hull following a £90,000 makeover.

More than 70 people gathered at the Hull Seafarers' Centre to watch as the Deputy Lord Mayor of Hull, Councillor Elaine Garland, unveiled a commemorative plaque for the re-opening.

Cllr Garland praised Mission to Seafarers for its vital work in supporting the thousands of ships and seafarers who pass through the port of Hull each year.

She was later shown around the centre, which she said would "provide invaluable support to the men and women who visit the port of Kingston-upon-Hull".

The Hull Seafarers' Centre is part of the recently formed Humber Seafarers' Service (HSS), an independent ecumenical charity sponsored by the three largest Christian maritime welfare organisations in the world, the Apostleship of the Sea, the British and International Sailors' Society and the Mission to Seafarers.

Additional support for the centre has come in from the ITF Seafarers' Trust and the Merchant Navy Welfare Board.

The centre hosts an internet café, WiFi area and telephones for calls home. A chapel, meanwhile, provides a place for services and relaxation.
