'Ray Donovan' Season 3 episode 1 spoilers: Major character will die

A major character will die in the Season 3 premiere of "Ray Donovan." Showtime

Showtime's crime drama "Ray Donovan" will return on its third season on July 12 and according to TV Guide, fans can expect a total shocker on the show's premiere episode.

The website reveals that a significant character is going to say goodbye on "The Kalamazoo," and it will be someone close to Ray (Liev Schreiber). While obviously hurting, he will still try to show a strong front for his wife and chidlren, who in turn want to help him come to terms with his pent-up emotions.

The show's promo trailers also provided interesting glimpses of what viewers can expect for Season 3. Katie Holmes will guest star on the hit drama and play the character of Paige, described as "a tough, stylish businesswoman" and daughter of billionaire Andrew Finney played by Ian McShane. Then there will be the Boston thug-turned-Hollywood fixer trying to rebuild his empire.

In Episode 3, Ray will be approached by the Finney family, one of the most powerful in all of Hollywood. Heavyweight patriarch Andrew wants to enlist his help in finding and freeing his son who was kidnapped. This will be a brand new challenge for Ray, as he is not used to dealing with clients as powerful and influential as the Finneys, Screenfad reports. Certainly, he has helped fix problems for celebrities and politicians in Los Angeles, but never at this level. But with him alienated from his family and his boss and mentor Ezra Goldman (Elliot Gould), added to the fact that his latest client is a nobody with "tawdry sense," he may have to bite into the offer while it's hot.

Meanwhile, Ray's father Mickey (Jon Voight) stumbles upon a new enterprise while reveling in his retirement. Abby (Paula Malcomson), rejected by husband and daughter, encounters a new friend on the streets of LA while brother Bunchy (Dash Mihok) struggles as he collects membership dues from an intimidating ensemble of luchadores at the Fite Club.

Season 2 ended with Ray cutting ties with Ezra after the latter ordered the murder of Boston Globe reporter Kate McPherson (Vinessa Shaw) despite his protest. Though Ezra did it to protect their secrets, Ray still could not accept his friend's betrayal.

The third season of "Ray Donovan" is set to premiere at 9 p.m. Sunday on Showtime.
