'Ray Donovan' season 3 episode 2 spoilers: Paige hires Ray

Katie Holmes and Liev Schreiber will team up for a new job in the upcoming episode of "Ray Donovan." Showtime

Showtime's crime drama series returned with an all-new season last Sunday and viewers finally saw the continuing story of the convoluted life of Ray Donovan (Liev Schreiber) and his disjointed family.

In "Ding," newcomer Katie Holmes will return as Paige Finney and calls on Ray to protect a quarterback. Cartermatt reports that it will be the businesswoman who contacted him regardless of her father Andrew's (Ian McShane) approval. Last episode, viewers got a handle of the complicated relationship between father and daughter, as Paige struggles to find her own power within her family. Meanwhile, Lena (Katherine Moennig), Ray's assistant, will consider quitting her job.

The season 3 premiere of the series began with a first look of a bedridden, barely alive Ezra (Elliott Gould) telling Deb (Denise Crosby) he needed to talk to Ray. The dying man just admitted that it was he who ordered the killing of journalist Kate McPherson (Vinessa Shaw). Ray did not want to talk to Ezra until it was too late and his mentor had died.

At the office, Avi (Steven Bauer) tried to explain that Kate was actually setting Ray up and that he would have gone to jail if he and Ezra did not intervene. He left the reporter's suitcase containing all the incriminating evidence to prove that they had his best interest at heart from the start.

Meanwhile, Ray met his new client Andrew whose son Casey (Guy Burnett) had been kidnapped. They did not hit it off at first, and it was clear that they both detested each other. But Andrew ended up giving him the job, at Paige's insistence. Ray found Casey and returned him to his father safe and sound. The Finney patriarch gave him a check, satisfied, and it looked like a new partnership was formed.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, new showrunner David Hollander talked about how Paige would fit into Ray's world.

"She's really built to reflect; she has her own aspirations and she's in a very complicated relationship with her father in a very complicated family. Part of Ray's new job this season is to manage that family. To manage not just the family's needs for him in the business, but the family. So between tasks he finds himself being asked to deal with and watch and protect McShane's character from what Paige might be up to," he said.

"Ray Donovan" airs Sunday at 9 p.m. EST on Showtime.
