In the final episode of Morgan Freeman's National Geographic documentary series, The Story of God, the Academy Award-winning actor explored the topic of modern day miracles and what their significance is to believers.
"To believe in miracles is to believe there's more to life than meets the eye, to accept there could be something that connects us, that unites us," Freeman said.
Freeman's conclusion isn't far off from the Christian interpretation of miracles. For us, miracles are one of many ways that God reveals himself to us. By understanding them we can build up a better understanding of His character. We learn of His power to defy logic, and His willingness to intervene in our lives in such a remarkable way that gives us an insight into the magnitude of His love for us.
Each miracle that Jesus performed throughout his time on earth can be interpreted for its own individual significance but there are also common themes among them, their reference to our salvation, eternal life and life to the full.
What's clear from any miracle, historic or modern day, is that they all serve as a reminder that through God, all things are possible.

Matthew 14:14 - When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
Mark 6:41-42 - Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. They all ate and were satisfied.
Mark 6:48-50- He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Shortly before dawn he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them,but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost. They cried out, because they all saw him and were terrified.
John 2:7-9 - Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine.
John 11:43-44 - When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.
Psalm 77:14 - You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples.
Psalm 105:5 - Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced.
Job 5:9 - He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted.
