Sony has announced the release date of the PlayStation VR to be Oct. 13, reports IGN. According to PlayStation team's Shawn Layden, there will be up to 50 games released this year that will take advantage of the PSVR and this list includes the newly announced "Star War Battlefront X-Wing Mission" and "Batman: Arkham VR."
The report further states that the VR unit will cost $399 or £349. It is undetermined at this point what kind of bundles will be included and how many games a PlayStation VR bundle may come with. It is expected that "PlayStation VR Worlds" will be included with all units of the PSVR.
Despite the launch still a few months away, the official PlayStation Blog confirms that major retail stores like Best Buy and GameStop will already have a unit on display with several game demos available. This will allow gamers to give the unit and its games a try.
IGN further reports that there will be over 500,000 being shipped to retail outlets, guaranteeing that there will be multiple VR games for consumers to try.
The PlayStation Blog post confirms that by June 24 there will be over 300 locations across the US and Canada with a PSVR unit and some games. Unfortunately, the report does not state if this will also become available elsewhere such as the U.K. or select locations in Asia.
A full list of states and cities where the demos of the games and the PSVR will be available have been posted on the PlayStation Blog as well, ensuring that gamers will know where to go in order to give the unit a try before deciding on spending their money to buy the product.
The PlayStation VR is in direct competition with the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift. However, unlike the two aforementioned units, the PlayStation VR is made specifically to work with the PS4 right out of the box, making it the most affordable and most consumer-friendly unit among the three. It also has a full list of PS4 games that are PSVR-compatible.
