New Playstation 4 specs and features: latest model more power-efficient than previous models

The newest Playstation 4 model exhibits greater power-efficiency than older versions of the console.

The findings comes as a result of a recent study conducted by Pocket News and subsequently translated into English by Eurogamer. The new model, named CUH-1200, was found to have made better use of the energy it consumed, and on top of that, it produced less noise while operating.

This analysis brings to light the similarity in power consumption levels of the Xbox One and Playstation 4.

The lower power consumption levels are being cited as the main reason why the new unit is also producing less fan noise while running. Playstation 4 owners have complained about the noise levels of the console in the past, and it stood as one of the most glaring flaws in its hardware, but the new unit's promise of a fix to that problem could prove greatly beneficial to Sony Computer Entertainment, the Playstation 4 creator.

Adding to the appeal of the new model, at least from the perspective of Sony, may be the significantly lower cost involved in producing the new model.

As for the physical features of the new Playstation 4, Gamespot reports that it possesses a significantly smaller motherboard that also has a different GDDR5 memory configuration, along with just eight memory modules. Both changes are meant to foster improved power consumption for the new model.

Other significant changes include a new power supply, Blu-ray drive and HDMI controller. The new Playstation is also significantly lighter than older models, which is something consumers like to look at when making a purchase.

While the new Playstation 4 is already available in Japan, it is not scheduled to arrive Europe until July 15. The home video game console competes with Nintendo's Wii U and Microsoft's Xbox One as an eighth generation of video game consoles.
