Jordin Sparks is "excited" about her new movie, Left Behind, due out in theatres on Friday.

Sparks plays a mother travelling on the plane with her child when the rapture happens, triggering chaos for those left behind.

"I had to dig really deep to try and figure out what would I feel if I just woke up and somebody I really loved just wasn't there anymore," she told Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb on Today.

Although the rapture has its basis in the Bible, Sparks said she had been "really excited" about the movie's broad appeal.

"It welcomes everybody to come to the theatre and everybody to come and experience this," she said.

"I read the teen version of the books when I was younger and I loved it and that's also my belief system."

Sparks also talked briefly on Today about her break-up from fiancé Jason Derulo, saying she was "good".

"I read this quote yesterday and it said when something unexpected happens in your life or you think something bad happens, just say 'plot twist' and move on," she laughed.

To which Gifford replied: "Yes exactly, God's got something better for you."

Although there's been a lot in the press about her break-up, her Twitter posts have been upbeat and reveal how she's leaning on her faith through it all.

Sparks's co-star in Left Behind, Nicolas Cage, recently revealed his pastor brother was an influence in his decision to take the lead role.

Academy-Award winning Cage, who plays airline pilot Rayford Steele in the end times thriller, told reporters: "My brother, Marc, is a Christian pastor, and he was very excited about this.

"He said, you know, Nicky, you've really got to do this.

"I'd already wanted to make the movie because I thought it was such a great script and an opportunity again to do something challenging but when I saw how passionate [he] was, I thought, well, yeah, I want to make this movie for my brother, too."

He also revealed he was "drawn to movies that aren't afraid to take on spiritual themes".
