iPod Touch 6G release date, specs: next-gen iPod to come in two variants?

According to industry reports, Apple is planning to come out with two versions of the next iPod touch.

There are numerous rumors surrounding the release of the 6th generation of the iconic music player from Apple. The most notable one, coming from Master Herald, is that the next-gen device will come in two variants. The two versions, a 4.7-inch one and another having a 5.5-inch display, will reportedly be revealed alongside the next flagship products of Apple. In terms of time frame, this would place the release of the iPod touch 6th generation in September, the same month when its predecessor, the 5th generation iPod touch, was launched in 2012.

In addition, since the speculated date of its launch is pegged after the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, the multimedia player might already come with iOS 9 out of the box. The current iOS working in Apple's mobile devices is the 8.3 version, and developers are already working on the beta version of iOS 8.4. Reports say that Apple is also working on the iOS 9, to be unveiled at the company's annual WWDC event slated in June.

Aside from the new iOS coming native into the device, it is speculated that the upcoming iPod touch will also have an improved battery life, new features such as a Touch ID fingerprint sensor, an 8-MP iSight camera, and will also come waterproofed, much like the recently-launched Apple Watch. It would also be compatible with the said wearable.

The device is said to come in six different colors: blue, red, pink, silver, space gray, and yellow. It will have 1 GB of RAM and will also feature an expandable storage through a microSD slot.

It should be noted, though, that Apple still has to comment on the upcoming launch of its flagship devices, and until an official announcement is made, much of the reported details concerning the iPod touch remain as products of the rumor mill.
