New album releases from Salisbury Cathedral Choir

Salisbury Cathedral is releasing two new albums via Priory Records this month.

They are an archive recording of Salisbury Cathedral Choir singing Anthems from the 17th and 18th Centuries originally released in 1961, and The Complete Organ Works of Herbert Sumsion, Volume 1.

The music of Herbert Sumsion was recorded last year on Salisbury's famous Father Willis organ by former Assistant Director of Music Daniel Cook.

The album has been released to fill a gap in the market for recordings of Sumsion's work.

The Anthems collection features a 1961 recording of the Salisbury Cathedral Choir singing under the direction of Christopher Dearnley, organist and master of the choristers from 1957 to 1968.

It features music by Purcell, Blow, Wise, Boyce, Greene, Battishill and Croft.

Priory Records said: "This recording by the fine choir of Salisbury Cathedral is appearing for the first time on CD and demonstrates that the tradition of singing in Salisbury over the last fifty years has been maintained. The sound in the transfer has come up well and the singing is good." The CD, price £9.00, features music by Purcell, Blow, Wise, Boyce, Greene, Battishill and Croft.
