A Lenovo executive has just confirmed that the company plans to release all upcoming Motorola handsets equipped with fingerprint scanners this yeaer.

According to Tech Sina, Chen Xudong, who is currently senior vice president of Lenovo Group and president of the company's China and APAC regions, confirmed that the company aims to add a fingerprint scanner to all handsets that Motorola will be launching this year. He adds that he was surprised that the move to add fingerprint sensors did not happen last year, and could not comprehend the reasons behind it.

The move is seen to be a means to have more handsets that will cater to the Android 6.0 Marshmallow firmware that requires provisions for fingerprint sensors on handsets that will run on the mobile operating system. The firmware will also bring other features such as access to Google's Now on Tap, Android Pay, the smart standby feature Doze Mode, new interface designs and many more.

The statement by Pudong also strengthens recent rumours by CNBeta that point to Motorola's next generation of Moto X handsets having provisions for a fingerprint scanner, and it is likely that that device will be one of the first Motorola handsets to launch with a scanner.

Pudong further adds that Motorola phones will no longer have displays smaller than 5 inches, and that the design of the handsets will also cater to more western consumers. On the software side, Lenovo and Motorola handsets will be seeing interfaces that are quite similar to each other this year.

Moreover, Moto handsets will now be targeted to more premium smartphone users, and Lenovo's Vibe series will now be the company's new mid-range line for budget segments. Lenovo still remains to be the top phone manufacturer in the world, and plans to further strengthen that claim this year.
