The second-generation Moto X smartphone has been updated to the newest Android 5.1 Lollipop update.
In the release notes listed on Motorola's support page, there are a couple of enhancements and improvements on both performance and feature of the device.
In terms of performance, apps will now launch faster on the Moto X (2014), thanks to an update on the native Android Runtime. Numerous fixes for glitches and bugs are also included in the latest update. Aside from general stability improvements, the second-gen Moto X now automatically reconnects to saved home Wi-Fi networks, and the issues regarding multiple Wi-Fi connections in one location has been fixed. Meanwhile, glitches regarding app crashes and restarts, especially with the Netflix and Chrome apps, have also been remedied.
For improvements on the phone's features, the most notable for users would be the enhanced device protection feature. Now, Moto Xs will remain locked until owners sign in with their Google account, even when the phone has been reset to its factory settings. This makes the device protected against thefts and makes the user's privacy more robust. Aside from the Google account, the phone can also be protected with more familiar security features such as a PIN code, password, or a pattern screen lock.
The new Android 5.1 on the second generation Moto X also tweaks its Moto Actions. Now, users just have to do chopping motions near their phone to turn the flashlight on and off. These gestures can now be done without waking or unlocking the phone.
Meanwhile, for those Moto X 2014 owners who haven't yet updated their phones, or had turned off their automatic updates and have not received any notifications, the release notes also include instructions on how to receive the update over the air.
