Mother who gave her son up for adoption now wants to pursue romantic relationship with him

People have often frowned upon the Oedipus complex theory, or the unconscious sexual desire of a child for the parent of the opposite sex.

However, 36-year-old Monica Mares from New Mexico and her son Caleb Peterson, 19, have taken the Oedipus complex theory to a whole new level by wishing to get married.

Mares gave her son up for adoption after giving birth to him at the age of 16. They only saw each other again last Christmas when she picked him up from his adoptive father's house in Texas. The two hit it off, and they continued communicating through Facebook, according to The Daily Mail.

"It was almost love at first sight but first it was mother love. He gave me a mother hug," Mares recalled. "He came home in the truck and came to live with me and we were both happy as mother and son."

When she started developing "crazy" feelings for her son, she was unsure what to do about it. "At first I told him, 'I'm sorry I don't know how you are going to react to this. I'm your mom and you're my son, but I'm falling in love with you.'"

Much to her surprise, Peterson answered, "You know what, I am, too. I was scared to let you know." They talked about it and decided to date each other.

Now, they are madly in love with each other and vowed to remain together even if they get jailed for their incestuous relationship. They have decided to go public with their relationship to raise awareness on genetic sexual attraction.

However, things did not go smoothly for them. They were charged with incest just this February – a fourth-degree felony in New Mexico. They were arraigned and appeared jointly in court in April. They were later held in custody for breaching their no-contact order. They were subsequently released on $5,000 bail bond and are going to face trial by jury this coming September.

"It is every bit worth it," said Mares. "If they lock me up for love, then they lock me up. There is no way anybody could pull us apart, and I really do love him."
