Methodist church to give away 3,000 prom dresses to help girls have memorable prom experience

The Woods Chapel United Methodist Church in Lee's Summit, Missouri wants to help teenage girls have the most memorable prom experience by offering around 3,000 gowns for free during a five-day open boutique.

Woods Chapel communications director Rachel Upp told the Christian Post that they will be opening the boutique on March 17 to 21 in hopes of helping all "young girls in our church and throughout the community."

"We want every girl to have a prom experience that she will remember forever," she explained. "We think every girl deserves this dream and we make it free so that ALL girls have the opportunity. No matter their size — our dresses last year ranged in sizes from 0-32W."

Upp said that aside from the dresses, they will also provide the girls with jewelry, handbags, and shoes as well as dress alterations.

"Basic alterations are available on site to ensure each dress fits properly. Our volunteers love helping each girl find their perfect dress. Some donations are brand new," she added.

Over 2,000 girls have expressed an interest in the five-day boutique, according to Fox News Kansas, and the church is still accepting more donations.

"We have a huge selection of over 3,000 dresses to choose from and donations are still coming into the church," said Upp. "Donations include prom/formal dresses, dress shoes, evening bags and handbags, costume jewellery, make up and undergarments."

Last year, the church gave away more than 2,400 prom dresses to girls coming from 130 different high schools and they are hoping for more participants this year.

Upp did say that they need more volunteers to help out during the five-day boutique in order to ensure that each girl in search of her dream dress will be properly accommodated.
