Lindisfarne Gospels inspire graffiti art project

The event has been organised by the Reverend Jim Craig, the Arts Chaplain for Gateshead and Bensham in the Anglican Diocese of Durham

A graffiti art project is to be launched in Gateshead on Monday in celebration of the return of the Lindisfarne Gospels to the region.

The stunning book goes on show at Durham University's Palace Green Library from 1 July to 30 September, and events are taking place across the North East to get people involved.

The Graffiti Gospels is a collaboration between Sanctuary Artspace at St Edmund's Chapel and four graffiti artists from the Gateshead-based CoMusica project.

They will spend the month of July installing a giant artwork inspired by the 8th century manuscript. Members of the public will be able to watch them as they work from 1 to 25 July.

The finished piece will be on display for a further five weeks after completion, until 29 August.

The project is sponsored by the new Trinity Square Tesco store in Gateshead and is part of the official Lindisfarne Gospels festival.

It is being officially launched on 1 July at 6pm with free drinks and buffet.
