Joyce Meyer reveals how Christians can let go of the past and have a new beginning

People often say they need to change, and yet don't do anything about it. Popular Christian speaker and author Joyce Meyer says some people who want to change unfortunately get stuck in procrastination or a passive mode, while some get angry or depressed and blame others for their mess.

So what should people do when they need to change? Meyer says Christians should get their determination from the Holy Spirit and declare, "I'm going to do what I can do to change this!"

"As Christians, we're partners with God; this means He has a part and we have a part. And the simple truth is, if we will do what we can do, God will do what we cannot do," she writes on her website.

Meyer says when people hear the truth in God's Word and feel convicted by it, they will realise the sin in their lives. And this is the first step in changing - to realise what is wrong.

After, people need to repent of their sins. "Being repentant means we're sincerely sorry and willing to turn away from it," says Meyer. Once this is done, people should develop the strong desire to study the Word of God in the area they need to change.

For those with anger issues, Meyer suggests they read up on scriptures concerning anger and forgiveness. The case is the same with greed or pride. "Use the Word like medicine and take it into your heart and mind. There is power in God's Word to bring change to our souls!" she says.

However, as easy as it might appear to change, Meyer reminds people that it is a lengthy process. "It usually doesn't happen overnight, but if we're determined to trust God and obey His Word, He will be faithful to give us the grace and strength we need to do what we can do and experience the changes He has for us," she says. "The key is for us to focus on God and the good things. Don't get stuck in your past, mourning for things you can't change or get back."
