iPhone 7 release date, specs and features: Three new handsets in September?

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Rumor has it that the next iPhone will come out this year. Apple.com

Apple has gotten into the habit of unveiling one or two handsets every year, and since the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have already warmed up on the shelves, rumors are already speculating about the next Apple handset.

Fresh from the launch of the Apple Watch and a new and reinvented Macbook, the tech community is asking whether Apple plans to release an iPhone 6s, or go straight to iPhone 7. However, reports have surfaced that Apple is looking to halving its smartphone update cycle this year, translating to two new phones being launched.

PC Pro adds to the rumors, citing that Apple intends to come up not with two but three handsets come September. Harking back to the 5s and 5c days, the company is expected to come up with an additional 4-inch version, to be aptly called either iPhone 6s or iPhone 7 mini.

The new iPhone would also get an inventive new feature in the form of Force Touch. Unveiled by Apple for its Watch and the new Macbook Retina's track pad, this option detects finger movement and the difference in force between a hard and soft tap. The degrees of pressure will have contextual menus pop up depending on the touch.

For its operating system, the new iPhone would get to show off the new release of the iOS 9. Said to feature an overhauled Maps and a host of bug fixes and improvements, this new system is expected to be unveiled at Apple's WWDC Conference in June, which would make it a timely addition to the new handset's expected September release.
