How Christians can help eradicate child poverty: 'Choose to give instead of get this year'

Millions of children live in poverty. These unfortunate souls have to constantly worry about where they are going to get their next meal or where they can obtain medicine when they get sick. But their lives can change when people do their part to help.

Compassion International is starting a new online fundraising programme called "Act for Compassion," which hopes to eradicate child poverty. The programme encourages people to think differently about their day-to-day lives and figure out ways on how they can change the lives of impoverished children, according to Mission Network News.

"This year, consider giving up birthday gifts and asking your friends to give hope instead by donating to children around the world who need it most," Compassion's Kerri Cook suggests.

Cook says that this is applicable to any milestone in one's life. For example, she cites a couple who started an online fundraising campaign to celebrate their 30th anniversary. Another couple who got married created an alternate wedding registry where guests are invited to give donations to children in need in lieu of their wedding presents.

"Choose to give instead of get this year. Your impact may be greater than you would ever imagine," she says.

Even everyday interests can be used to change lives, Cook says. One running enthusiast convinced her friends to help by pledging $50 for every 50k she runs. One couple conducted a coast-to-coast bicycle trip, aspiring to raise $1 for every mile of their bike ride.

Another woman even held a bake-off with her friends, and the proceeds of the event were given to children suffering from poverty.

"People are finding ways to make a difference through the things they love and are already doing every day!" says Cook. "Whatever it is you love to do, you can turn your passion into a life-giving activity."
