The seventh season of the spy thriller series "Homeland" will not be premiering until 2018, but the series' creator Alex Gansa has hinted that protagonist Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) will finally be coming back to the Central Intelligence Agency.
In the past couple of seasons, Mathison was no longer working for the CIA. Most recently, she has become one of the advisors of newly elected President Keane. However, there will be a falling out between her and the president, which will ultimately lead her to go back to work in intelligence.
"We are faced with the task, again, of getting our lead character Carrie Mathison back into the intelligence community," Gansa shared. "She's been outside that business for too long. And I think we've exhausted the storytelling around that idea."
Gansa also revealed that once Mathison gets back, she will be sent on a mission overseas.
The final episode of the sixth season saw the President Keane ordering a mass arrest of people that were suspected to be planning a coup against her. Mathison then found out that one of the arrested people was her mentor Saul (Mandy Patinkin).
The former CIA operative tried to contact the president to convince her to let Saul go, but the president refused to talk to her.
Because of this series of events, it is expected that Mathison will be resigning from her position and will ultimately find her way back to what she does best and re-join the CIA.
It is possible that season 7 will pit the protagonist against the powerful President Keane. However, the leader may also realize that she owes her life to Mathison, who saved her from a previous assassination attempt.
Television network Showtime has not yet revealed the exact schedule for "Homeland's" return, but it is expected to be back by January.
