'Homeland' season 5 spoilers: Chaos follows Carrie in Germany

 Showtime

It seems like wherever Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) goes, her espionage roots will continue to haunt her.

The trailer for "Homeland" season 5 has been released, and it shows Carrie denying her current association with the CIA after she resigned from her post at the end of season 4.

The trailer begins with her new life in Berlin with her daughter Frannie, two years after the events in season 4. She seems to be happy and contented with her new life, and she gets a job as the head of security for a German philanthropist.

But danger soon catches up with Carrie. A new project requires her to dig up her intelligence expertise to help the Germans get hold of American information due to a massive data breach into U.S. surveillance.

"Maybe I knew someday that the past would catch up with me," Carrie says in the promo.

The action-packed trailer, complete with explosive bombings and a series of kidnappings, also shows Carrie's former colleague-turned-lover Peter Quinn (Rupert Friend) who seems to be in the middle of all the chaos.

Meanwhile, series showrunner Alex Gansa explained in a recent interview with Deadline how they are trying to make the plot of the series appear as if it really happens in real life. According to Ganza, the writers of the show consulted with real CIA agents and got their inspiration from real intelligence gathered from Washington in order to stay close to reality.

"We entertain a parade of intelligence officers — current and former — State Department people, White House staffers, and we get a real sense of what people are talking about in Washington," the series showrunner shared. "Those meetings taking place over a week so heavily influence the show so that some people think, 'Oh my god, you guys are so prescient, things that appear on 'Homeland' the next week will appear in the newspaper.'"

"Homeland" season 5 will premiere on Sunday, Oct. 4, on Showtime.
